) Incomes rise, but household spending, new debt down
Household spending slowed, even though average income was up, and people ran up less debt in the first half of the year because of economic and political uncertainties, the National Statistics Office said.The office yesterday released its findings from surveys between January to June.
Average household income rose to 18,823 baht a month, up 5.8% on the same period last year, while average household expenses stood at 14,424 baht a month, an increase of only 0.8%.
Average household debt stood at 113,389 baht, which was down 2.7% on last year.
The office said that despite the rise in incomes, families were more reluctant to go into debt or make new investments. Instead, most families saved more, reversing recent trends. Household outlays climbed by 6.3% in 2005 and by 7.9% last year. More>>

) Drunk driving kills 7 in Bangkok
Seven people were killed and five others severely injured when their pick-up car slammed into a Bangkok road guardrail early Thursday morning.
The accident took place in the early morning on the inbound Kanchanapisek Road in Bangkok's Bang Bon district, local media group The Nation reported on its website.
Witnesses told police that the pick-up driven by a Chairat Kingkaew, 30, who was injured, tried to overtake a truck but it lost control and hit into the guardrail before hitting a tree on the roadside.
Police said four people died at the scene and three more died at a hospital. The pick-up was carrying 12 people and had left a fuel station where they were drinking.
A friend of Chairat said a total of 16 people were drinking on the back of the pick-up in a fuel station until they were asked to leave. More>>
